2 days agoThe Cleveland Guardians announced on Tuesday that they acquired right-hander Cody Bolton from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations. After acquiring him, Cleveland optioned him to Triple-A Columbus and moved left-hander John Means (elbow) to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster. The 26-year-old Bolton made his MLB debut in 2023 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and pitched last year with the Mariners. In 33 relief appearances over those two seasons, he produced a 5.40 ERA (5.09 FIP) and 1.80 WHIP with 39 strikeouts and 24 walks in 40 innings pitched. He'll serve as relief depth for the Guardians in the minors. In his first two relief outings at Triple-A Tacoma before the trade, Bolton gave up three runs (two earned) while walking three and striking out one in just two innings of work.Source: GuardsInsider
2 days agoThe Detroit Tigers placed catcher Jake Rogers (oblique) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with a left-oblique strain and recalled catcher Tomas Nido up from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. The Tigers also shifted outfielder Wenceel Perez (back) to the 60-day injured list to make room for Nido on the 40-man roster. Rogers lands on the IL after injuring himself taking swings before Tuesday's win over the visiting New York Yankees. Dillon Dingler, who homered on Tuesday, will now take over as Detroit's primary backstop. It's unclear if the 29-year-old Rogers will be able to return when he's eligible to come off the IL on April 18. Before his injury on Tuesday, Rogers had gone 4-for-18 with a triple, three runs scored, four walks and five strikeouts in six games played. Dingler is now on the radar for those in two-catcher and AL-only leagues.Source: The Athletic - Cody Stavenhagen

2 days agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Josh Lowe (oblique) is improving nicely from a Grade 2 right-oblique strain that he suffered on Opening Day. "Josh is actually moving pretty pain free, which we're encouraged by that. It's still a ways, but we got to be happy with the way he's his body is feeling," manager Kevin Cash said. Lowe still has a ways to go before the Rays think about activating him from the IL, but so far he's making good progress from an injury that sidelined him last year as well. It remains to be seen when Lowe will resume baseball activities, but it seems unlikely that we'll see him back in the big leagues before the end of April. In the meantime, given all the injuries to Tampa Bay's outfielders -- Jonny DeLuca just went on the IL on Tuesday with a shoulder ailment -- both Kameron Misner and Jake Mangum will see regular playing time for the Rays.Source: Ryan Bass

2 days agoThe Cincinnati Reds recalled infielder Noelvi Marte from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday after placing second baseman Matt McLain (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list. Marte isn't in the team's starting lineup on Tuesday in San Francisco against the Giants, but he'll give the Reds additional infield depth moving forward with McLain sidelined. The 23-year-old earned the early-season call-up by hitting .353 (12-for-34) with six doubles, five RBI and three stolen bases in nine games at Louisville. The Dominican infielder just couldn't get it going in his second year in the big leagues in 2024 after serving an 80-game suspension for a violation of the league's drug-prevention program, as he slashed .210/.248/.301 with a .549 OPS in 66 games for the Reds. Marte will get more chances to prove he belongs in the big leagues, but for now, he's merely a stash candidate in NL-only affairs.Source: Cincinnati Reds
2 days agoSan Diego Padres outfielder Jackson Merrill (hamstring) is heading to the 10-day injured list due to a hamstring injury, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee. Merrill appears to be walking fine, but his recovery isn't progressing as quickly as the team had hoped, and the Padres have decided to exercise caution with the star outfielder. Brandon Lockridge is making another start in center field for the Friars on Tuesday against the A's, with Jose Iglesias getting the nod in left field against left-handed starter Jeffrey Springs. Fantasy managers will keep their fingers crossed that it's a minimum IL stay for the 21-year-old, who has quickly become one of the best young outfielders in the game after a breakout first season in the big leagues in 2024. Lockridge should now be in line for regular playing time in center field for however long Merrill is sidelined.Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Kevin Acee
2 days agoMilwaukee Brewers right-hander Quinn Priester, who was recently acquired in a trade with the Boston Red Sox, is a good bet to start Thursday's series finale against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Todd Rosiak. Once a top prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, the 24-year-old will get the first shot at replacing lefty Nestor Cortes (elbow) in Milwaukee's starting rotation, although he'll be a very risky streamer in his first MLB start at Coors Field this week. In 11 outings (seven starts) with the Pirates and Red Sox in 2024, Priester had a 4.71 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with 33 strikeouts and 14 walks in 49 2/3 innings. The former first-rounder allowed two earned runs while walking none and fanning six in four innings in his lone start at Triple-A Worcester before the trade. Priester is merely a flier in NL-only leagues at the moment.Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Todd Rosiak
2 days agoMilwaukee Brewers left-hander Nestor Cortes (elbow) received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his injured left elbow, according to manager Pat Murphy. The Brewers placed Cortes on the injured list on Sunday due to a left-elbow strain, and there is no timetable for his return. At the very least, the 30-year-old southpaw will miss the rest of April. In his first start with the Brew Crew against his former team, the New York Yankees, Cortes had a nightmare outing, allowing eight earned runs on six hits (five homers allowed) while walking five and striking out two in just two innings of work. He rebounded with six shutout innings with six K's and a win in his second start against the Cincinnati Reds, though, before landing on the IL. For now, recent acquisition Quinn Priester will take Cortes' spot in Milwaukee's starting rotation.Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Todd Rosiak
2 days agoHouston Astros left-hander Framber Valdez (illness) will make his scheduled start on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park against the division-rival Seattle Mariners. It was unclear over the weekend whether Valdez would be able to make his start this week while he was dealing with fatigue and a sore throat, but the 31-year-old veteran southpaw will toe the rubber and should be started in single-year fantasy leagues. Valdez looked great on Opening Day on March 27 against the New York Mets, tossing seven scoreless innings in a win with two walks and four strikeouts. However, he gave up five earned runs while walking four and striking out nine in five innings for a loss against the San Francisco Giants his last time out on April 2. Fantasy managers will be hoping for an outing more along the lines of his season debut now that he's apparently feeling better.Source: MLB.com
2 days agoPhiladelphia Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez (back) will start a minor-league rehab assignment and will pitch three innings for Low-A Clearwater on Thursday, according to The Athletic's Matt Gelb. It will be Suarez's first game action since he was shut down in mid-March in spring training with lower-back stiffness. The 29-year-old southpaw will need at least several more rehab starts on the farm before he's a candidate to make his 2025 regular season debut in the big leagues, which will likely come in early May. The Venezuelan hurler also missed extensive time in 2024 with a back injury and wasn't as sharp when he returned, but he still finished with a serviceable 3.46 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 145:41 K:BB in 150 2/3 innings over his 27 starts. When healthy, Suarez is worth rostering in all fantasy leagues as a ground-ball pitcher, but his below-average 21.8% strikeout rate leaves little in the way of upside.Source: The Athletic - Matt Gelb
3 days agoThe Houston Astros officially placed right-hander Spencer Arrighetti (thumb) on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with a fractured right thumb and recalled reliever Luis Contreras from the minors in a corresponding move. In a freak incident, Arrighetti broke his thumb during batting practice before Monday's contest against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. It's a tough break for the 25-year-old, who will most likely miss at least a month of action. Even though Arrighetti has a 5.59 ERA (4.62 FIP) and 0.93 WHIP with eight strikeouts and five starts in his first two starts this year, fantasy managers in mixed leagues should be looking to stash him in an IL spot. The Astros haven't revealed their plans yet as to who will replace the second-year starter in the rotation.Source: Houston Chronicle - Matt Kawahara
3 days agoCleveland Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas (wrist) left the team's home opener on Tuesday against the division-rival Chicago White Sox after he was hit by a pitch near/on his right wrist. Thomas was checked out by a trainer and manager Stephen Vogt and stayed in the game, but he was removed after one batter before Daniel Schneemann pinch-ran for him. Before departing, the 29-year-old went 0-for-1 with a strikeout. Cleveland will most likely put Thomas through some tests to determine the severity of his injury, but even if he avoids a fracture, there's a good chance we won't see him on Wednesday at Progressive Field. If Thomas is forced to miss extended time, Schneemann could see regular playing time in center field. It's been a tough start to 2025 for Thomas, as he came into Tuesday's game hitting .172 (5-for-29) with seven strikeouts in seven games. UPDATE: Thomas was diagnosed with a right-wrist contusion, so consider him day-to-day.Source: MLB.com - Tim Stebbins
3 days agoSeattle Mariners infielder/outfielder Dylan Moore is starting at third base and is hitting leadoff on Tuesday against the division-rival Houston Astros and left-hander Framber Valdez at T-Mobile Park. It's notable with outfielder Victor Robles (shoulder) on the injured list with a serious shoulder injury that could keep him out for the majority of the season. The 32-year-old Moore will see a boost in fantasy value in deeper leagues if he gets a long look in the leadoff spot for Seattle moving forward, especially after his hot start to 2025. He's currently slashing .381/.480/.667 with a 1.147 OPS, two home runs, two RBI, two stolen bases and five runs scored in his first nine games played. Moore is especially useful in fantasy for his speed (career-high 32 swipes in 2023) and his multi-position eligibility. He's hit .192 in 26 career at-bats versus Valdez, but he does have one homer and three RBI.Source: MLB.com
3 days agoToronto Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk (leg) is getting a breather on Tuesday against the division-rival Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Tyler Heineman will take over the catching duties and work with left-hander Easton Lucas while batting eighth against Red Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet. According to manager John Schneider, Kirk is "a little beat up, but he's fine, just a normal off day" after fouling a ball off his leg "right below the kneecap in between the knee and the shin guard." The plan all along had been to give Heineman a start on Tuesday anyway. It's possible the Jays will give Kirk an extra day off on Wednesday, so fantasy managers will want to check back on his status. Fantasy managers setting DFS lineups should be able to do better at the catcher position than Heineman, who has never faced Crochet in his career.Source: MLB.com
