Zach Thompson Strikes Out 11 On Saturday
3 years agoMiami Marlins rookie starting pitcher Zach Thompson was excellent against the Washington Nationals on Saturday. He tossed six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out 11. The two earned runs he allowed should probably have been unearned, as they both came on a ball that should have been an easy out, but Marlins outfielder Jesus Sanchez lost the ball in the lights and the official scorer counted it as a hit. Thompson had his cutter and his big curveball both working in this one, throwing 57 of his 91 pitches for strikes. The 27-year-old rookie has been better in the big leagues than he ever was in the minors, but there are reasons to think it may actually be sustainable. He has a 2-2 record to go with a 2.00 ERA.
