Yonny Chirinos Steps Up For The Rays Thursday
7 years agoTampa Bay Rays pitcher Yonny Chirinos stepped up with a strong performance Thursday versus Boston. He went five scoreless innings, striking out four without a walk. He would set the table on the bullpen day and the next three pitchers would follow with a scoreless inning themselves. Ultimately, closer Alex Colome would blow the save in the ninth and Boston won in 12 innings. In his first two appearances in the majors, Chirinos has now gone nine innings against Boston without giving up a run. Chirinos was named the Rays 2017 minor league pitcher of the year, so he comes with some talent. The award is also notable for the fact he beat out Brent Honeywell. Chirinos could become an interesting factor in fairly deep leagues if he gets regular starts.
