Beginning a four-game set in St. Louis against the Cardinals on Thursday night, the Philadelphia Phillies sent out starting pitcher Vince Velasquez to continue the club’s early-season success. After two rough starts to finish off April, the 25-year-old continued his success in May, picking up a win in a 6-2 final. Velasquez went 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and two walks with zero runs surrendered and five strikeouts. Through the first six innings of the performance, he’d only allowed four hits, with two being infield singles. In the seventh, however, he allowed a walk and a double, resulting in his exit. Regardless, the bullpen hung on to finish out the victory, improving Velasquez’s record to 4-4 on the season.--RDelgado
