6 years agoCincinnati Reds right-hander Tyler Mahle gave up four runs over 5 1/3 innings in a 12-11 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. Mahle struck out five and walked one in a no-decision. The young right-hander has been mostly solid this season, although he has allowed 10 earned runs in his two starts since the All-Star break. Mahle has a 2-10 record, 4.93 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 106 strikeouts in 102 1/3 innings of work. He will look for his third win on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers.--Matt T - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoTexas Rangers right-hander Tyler Mahle (forearm) pitched in a minor-league game in camp on Thursday against Double-A Northwest Arkansas and allowed three runs in four innings while allowing six hits, walking none and striking out five. He threw 42 of his 55 pitches for strikes and tossed an extra 10 pitches in the bullpen after being scratched from his Cactus League start earlier this week with right-forearm tightness. The 30-year-old's MRI results didn't show any structural damage in his arm, though, and Mahle should be able to get back into a spring training game soon. It's great news for a pitcher who only made three starts in 2024 in his return from Tommy John surgery in 2023. He also missed time late last year with a shoulder injury. Because his innings will be limited in 2025, Mahle is really only worth stashing in deeper fantasy leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoTexas Rangers right-hander Tyler Mahle's (forearm) MRI exam came back clean after he was scratched from his Cactus League outing on Tuesday as a precaution. Mahle feels fine on Wednesday and will pitch sometime in the next few days, according to MLB.com's Kennedi Landry. The 30-year-old dodged a bullet after having Tommy John surgery in May of 2023. Mahle didn't make his 2024 debut until early August and made only three starts for the Rangers before being shut down with right-shoulder soreness. Although his latest injury scare this spring isn't serious, it's hard to trust Mahle moving forward given all of his recent arm injuries. When healthy, he will be a part of Texas' starting rotation, but his workload will be managed, lowering his fantasy ceiling. Fantasy managers in 12-team leagues can ignore Mahle on draft day. UPDATE: Mahle is scheduled to pitch on Thursday against the San Francisco Giants.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

4 weeks agoTexas Rangers right-hander Tyler Mahle (forearm) was scratched from his scheduled Cactus League start on Tuesday versus the division-rival Los Angeles Angels with what was described as "forearm soreness." The Rangers are taking an abundance of caution, but as the Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant points out, there is always caution and concern when it comes to a forearm injury. Young right-hander Jack Leiter took Mahle's place as the starter on Tuesday. It's especially concerning for the 30-year-old Mahle because of the fact that he made only three starts in 2024 before undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery. If Mahle is unable to be ready for the start of the regular season, it would open up a starting rotation spot for either Leiter or Kumar Rocker. Mahle has started only eight big-league games the last two seasons with the Twins and Rangers due to injuries.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

2 months agoAccording to Kennedi Landry of MLB.com, Texas Rangers starting pitcher Tyler Mahle enters spring training with a "clean bill of health" and will have "no restrictions." Mahle missed most of the 2024 season due to removing from Tommy John surgery. He returned to the bump in August but was only able to make three starts before being shut down with shoulder tightness. However, seeing him enter spring training without any restrictions is a great sign for his status. Mahle enjoyed a career season during the 2021 campaign with the Cincinnati Reds as he posted a 3.75 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP across 180 frames. He struck out 210 batters and served up just 64 free passes during that season. Fantasy managers should expect the 30-year-old to slot in the starting rotation. If he performs well in spring training, he could be worth a look later in drafts in deeper formats, given the strikeout upside he flashed earlier in his career.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
