Ty Gibbs' Strong Darlington Run Derailed By Late Crash
3 months agoTy Gibbs finished 20th after an eventful day in the Cookout Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. The No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing driver started the race from the 13th position but made steady progress towards the front throughout the day. In the first stage, Gibbs climbed a couple of positions and placed seventh by the end of the stage, earning a few stage points in the process. In the second stage, Gibbs continued to run in the Top 10, made more green flag pit stops without issues, and then racked up more stage points by ending sixth at the end of the stage. In the final stage, Gibbs stayed out of trouble up until the restart on lap 342. Thanks to pit strategy, Gibbs made it to the Top 5 on this restart, only to make contact with Josh Berry and become entangled in a multi-car accident. Gibbs continued after this crash, but the ensuing damage reduced the speed of his car, causing him to fall one lap down and score a lackluster 20th-place finish. With the Cup Series next heading to Atlanta to open the 2024 playoffs, Gibbs is one driver to keep an eye on due to having two top-10 finishes at the site in three starts in the Cup Series.
