Ty Gibbs Quietly Has A Great Top-5 Run At Daytona
4 months agoSophomore driver Ty Gibbs ended up finishing fifth in Saturday's Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway. Gibbs started from the 26th position and quietly rode along with the pack during the race's first two stages. The No. 54 Toyota driver failed to score stage points in the first two stages as Gibbs ended stage one in 19th place and stage two in 15th. In the final stage, while other drivers would be involved in multiple crashes, Gibbs avoided all but one; however, he received minor damage. As a result, Gibbs put his car in position for a top finish by the race's final restart in overtime. In the final restart, Gibbs became part of the top line that eventually helped push Harrison Burton to victory, and on the final lap, Gibbs ascended to the Top 5, scoring a new career-best cup finish at the site. The top-5 result also was the seventh of the season for Gibbs and marks the first time he nabbed two consecutive top-five results in back-to-back weeks this season since March. As the Cup Series travels to Darlington next, Gibbs will look to lock up a playoff spot at a venue where he finished as the runner-up earlier in the year.
