1 year agoBoston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (illness) is back in the team's Grapefruit League lineup on Saturday against the Washington Nationals, playing first base and batting cleanup. Casas is now over his bout with the flu and will return to spring training action this weekend as he prepares for Opening Day in late March. The 24-year-old will be Boston's starting first baseman, and the 26-year-old left-handed slugger will have high expectations after breaking out to the tune of a .263/.367/.490 slash line with an .856 OPS, 24 home runs, 21 doubles, two triples, 65 RBI and 66 runs scored in 132 games in 2023 in his first full big-league season. If he stays healthy, Casas should improve as long as he keeps hitting the ball as hard as he did in 2023. RotoBaller has him ranked as the No. 10 fantasy first baseman.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

1 week agoBoston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (hand) is out of the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Sultanes de Monterrey for an exhibition contest after he tried to barehand a bad-hop ground ball with his right hand on Monday night, according to MLB.com's Ian Browne. X-rays on Casas' hand came back negative, so he avoided a serious injury, and it seems likely that he'll be able to play on Opening Day on Thursday against the Texas Rangers. Fantasy managers are still waiting for a potential breakout for the 25-year-old former first-rounder after he was forced to miss almost four months in 2024 due to torn cartilage in his left rib cage. He wasn't the same hitter when he returned and finished with a .241/.337/.462 slash line with an .800 OPS, 13 homers and 32 RBI in just 63 games. The jury is still out, but Casas is still a low-end starting first baseman in fantasy for his power upside.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

4 weeks agoBoston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (illness) is returning to the starting lineup on Tuesday to face the Philadelphia Phillies. He will cover first base and bat in the three-hole. The 25-year-old has missed time due to an illness. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status but it appears he will not be in any danger of missing Opening Day. Last season, Casas made just 63 starts as he sustained a rib injury. Across this stint, he held an underwhelming .241/.337/.462 line with 13 home runs. He drew walks at a strong 13.2 percent rate but struck out at a high 31.7 percent rate. In 2023, Casas enjoyed a breakout campaign as he posted a .263/.367/.490 line with 21 doubles and 24 long balls. Fantasy managers should expect Casas to have an everyday role in the Boston lineup, spending most of his time at first base.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

4 weeks agoBoston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (illness) returned to camp on Sunday. The 25-year-old was dealing with an illness. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status but he should have plenty of time to increase his workload by Opening Day. Last season, the 25-year-old only appeared in 63 contests as he missed most of the season due to a rib injury. During this stint, he held a disappointing .241/.337/.462 slash line with eight doubles and 13 long balls. He showed a strong eye at the plate as he drew walks at a 12.3 percent rate and generated an elite 13.3 percent barrel rate. During the 2023 campaign, Casas logged a career-high 132 contests and posted a .263/.347/.490 line with 21 doubles and 24 long balls. When healthy, he should be the everyday first baseman in Boston.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

1 month agoBoston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (illness) was scratched from Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Pittsburgh Pirates due to a stomach bug that continues to make its way through the team this spring. Casas is under the weather now, but we'd expect him to be feeling good enough to return to spring training action later this week. With the 25-year-old left-handed slugger out on Tuesday, Nathan Hickey will fill in for him at first base and bat cleanup for the BoSox. Casas missed almost four months in 2024 due to torn rib cartilage and had a strikeout rate of 33.3 percent once he returned. The former 26th overall pick in 2018 hit 24 home runs and drove in 165 in his first full MLB season in 132 games in 2023, but his rib injury set him back a year ago. There's no denying that Casas has 30-homer power at first base, but we're still waiting for him to prove it. He's ranked as RotoBaller's No. 12 first baseman.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
