The Cardinals Could Start the Season Without a Closer
7 years agoThe St. Louis Cardinals may start the season without officially naming a closer. General manager John Mozeliak said, "When you look at it right now, that eighth, ninth inning, we have three or four arms who can compete for [the closer job] or do that." He later added, "Once the season starts, I think we'll try to get into that ebb and flow where there is someone who has the ninth." So at least we know they don't plan on sticking to a committee all season, but it still promises to be an annoying situation to kick off the year. Luke Gregerson was considered the favorite when Spring Training began, but he was dealing with an oblique injury that limited his opportunities to pitch in Grapefruit League games. Dominic Leone has looked like the best option in the spring, and Tyler Lyons has been previously mentioned as a ninth-inning option as well. Fantasy players should avoid this bullpen if possible until things take shape.
