4 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies starting pitcher Spencer Howard threw three shutout innings in a start at the Yankees on Wednesday. Howard allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two. The rookie has been good in a limited capacity for Philly, but will need to prove he can pitch deeper into games to be a fantasy asset. The first time through the batting order, Howard has not allowed a run while giving up just a .106 batting average and a .179 wOBA. Things change once batters have some familiarity with Howard, however. He's only faced 27 batters the second time through the order and has allowed six hits, six walks and eight earned runs with a .516 wOBA allowed. Howard remains a strong dynasty prospect, but redraft managers have little use for what Howard provides.--Mike Schwarzenbach - RotoBaller

9 months agoThe San Francisco Giants announced that pitcher Erik Miller will open the game against the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Miller last pitched on June 19, where he also started, and threw one scoreless inning with one walk and two strikeouts. The left-hander will start on Monday, but Spencer Howard is expected to follow him out of the bullpen and serve as the bulk reliever. Howard has struggled as of late on the mound, giving up seven runs (six earned runs) with five walks and four strikeouts over his last 3 1/3 innings of work. He does get a favorable matchup against a Cubs offense that ranks in the bottom half of the league in most categories. Still, Howard should only be considered in extremely deep formats on Monday.--Joey Pollizze - RotoBaller

1 year agoWith San Francisco Giants right-hander Keaton Winn (elbow) dealing with elbow soreness in camp, it's possible that pitchers Spencer Howard or Daulton Jefferies could make the club's Opening Day roster as starting rotation options. Howard, 27, and Jefferies, 28, are both in camp this year as non-roster invites for the Giants. Howard hasn't had success so far in 38 big-league outings (29 starts) over four seasons, posting a rough 7.20 ERA and 1.67 WHIP with 55 walks and 109 K's in 115 innings. Jefferies, meanwhile, is attempting to return in 2024 after his second Tommy John surgery. In his three years with the Oakland Athletics, the right-hander went 2-8 with a 5.75 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with 14 walks and 37 K's in 56 1/3 innings over 14 appearances (10 starts). The Giants could be in trouble early on if they're relying on Howard or Jefferies in their rotation.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

2 years agoThe Texas Rangers shipped right-hander Spencer Howard to the New York Yankees on Tuesday for cash consideration, according to MLB.com. The former prospect has never figured it out in the big leagues, sporting a career ERA of 7.20 over 115 innings. Across 3 1/3 frames this season, Howard has allowed four earned runs and three walks while striking out two. In the Bronx, the 27-year-old figures to give the club some depth in the rotation and bullpen but will likely remain in the minors for now. Fantasy managers should keep Howard on the waiver wire in all leagues.--Spencer Seguin

2 years agoTexas Rangers starting pitcher Spencer Howard (arm) was scheduled to take the ball during Monday's Grapefruit contest against the Colorado Rockies. However, that didn't happen due to the fact Howard was dealing with arm fatigue. The expectation is that Howard should be able to take the mound within the next few days, assuming he doesn't suffer any setbacks. The 26-year-old struggled heavily last season during his 10 appearances with the Rangers. There is no reason to believe Howard will be a fantasy asset this upcoming season.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller
