Shohei Ohtani Begins Throwing Program
4 years agoLos Angeles Angels starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani (forearm) is currently throwing from 120 feet at 75-80 percent intensity, and the Angels plan to have the right-hander back as a two-way player in 2021. The Japanese star made just two starts in 2020 before he was shut down with a right forearm strain that kept him from pitching for the rest of the year. As a designated hitter, Ohtani struggled to the tune of a .190/.291/.366 slash line with seven home runs and 24 RBI in 44 games. The 26-year-old didn't pitch in 2019 after having Tommy John surgery, but the 2018 American League Rookie of the Year is expected to be fully healthy for spring training, unlike the last two seasons. He'll likely pitch once a week and serve as the designated hitter three to four times a week. If Ohtani cannot stay healthy as a pitcher, there's a chance the Angels could make him a full-time position player either at first base or in right field.
