Shane Van Gisbergen Falls Short of Victory At Watkins Glen
2 months agoShane Van Gisbergen placed second at Watkins Glen International during the Go Bowling for the Glen, falling short of victory. Starting from third place, Van Gisbergen showcased how much faster his car was compared to the field during the first stage. In the first stage, SVG ran inside the Top 3 for the whole stage until he decided to pit a few laps before the end of the stage. As a result, SVG ended 15th. In the second stage, Van Gisbergen continued his strong run as he chased down race leader Ross Chastain through the entire stage but couldn't pass him. The No. 16 Chevrolet driver ended the stage in second after a caution came out before he and Chastain could hit pit road. In the final stage, Van Gisbergen maintained his pace and kept coming back through the field even through multiple pit stops, cautions, and incidents, returning to second by the race's final restart for overtime. In overtime, SVG raced with Chris Buescher for the win, nudging him on turn 1 to take the lead until the white flag lap. Then, in the carousel section of Watkins Glen, SVG overshot the corner, allowing Buescher to catch up and bump him for the lead. Despite his best efforts to return the favor, SVG could not keep his car straight enough off the final corners and became the race's runner-up.
