Semyon Der-Arguchintsev Drafted By Maple Leafs
6 years agoWith their acquired pick from a draft-day trade in the first round, the Toronto Maple Leafs selected Semyon Der-Arguchintsev 76th overall. The right-shooting center has spent the last two seasons with the Peterborough Petes of the OHL. Undersized at 5-foot-10 and 159 pounds, the pivot has playmaking skills and vision sought after by many and has lots of time yet to bulk up. Born on September 15, 2000, he was only just eligible for this draft class. Had he been born a day later, he would’ve had to wait for the 2019 draft. The Leafs are betting on future potential here, and Der-Arguchintsev is excited for it. In his post-draft media scrum, the third-rounder very casually dropped that he was glad the Leafs picked him because his friend plays for the team. Nikita Zaitsev and Semyon’s older brother played together at home growing up, and Der-Arguchintsev often attends Leafs games using Zaitsev’s tickets. This selection has boom or bust written all over it but as previously mentioned, there is lots of time. He will very likely return to the CHL for a third season with the Petes.
