Ryan Yarbrough Could Become More Of A Traditional Starter
5 years agoTampa Bay Rays pitcher Ryan Yarbrough, who served as the "bulk" pitcher following an opener mostly in 2019, enters spring training this year with a chance to be a traditional starter. Yarbrough threw a scoreless inning against the Yankees in his spring debut on Sunday, striking out one while throwing 14 of his 21 pitches for strikes. The left-hander's hardest pitch, his cutter, averaged just 84.1 mph last year, but he has a lot of deception with the pitch. He also has success with a sinker, changeup, curveball and occasional four-seam fastball. Yarbrough's average exit velocity of 84.1 mph in 2019 was the best in the majors among pitchers with at least 350 batted balls in play. Yarbrough's fantasy value is tough to judge because it will depend on how many starts he gets and how long he goes in those starts, but if he's used as more of a traditional starter in 2020, he'll have some appeal as a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues.
