Ryan Madson Is Being Overused, Blames Himself
7 years agoWashington Nationals reliever Ryan Madson is blaming himself for his recent poor showings. As one of the Nationals' core three (Sean Doolittle and Brandon Kintzler being the other two), he's been overused as the team consistently finds ifself in a lot of one-run games. He was blown up for six earned runs two weeks ago versus the Mets and had thrown over 80 pitches in the days leading up to that game. Since returning last Tuesday from that disastrous outing, Madson has thrown 38 pitches in 3 2/3 innings across four games. His ERA now stands at 5.79 in 15 appearances 29 games into the season. That's over half of the team's games. Kintzler, too, has seen a high number of appearances. Madson should still be a steady source of holds, but it remains to be seen if his 37-year-old body can hang on for much longer.
