Royals In Sell Mode As Deadline Approaches
The Kansas City Royals, who traded catcher Martin Maldonado to the Cubs on Monday, are in sell mode with the July 31 trade deadline approaching. According to a source, the focus will be on moving outfielder Billy Hamilton, reliever Jake Diekman, first baseman Lucas Duda and closer Ian Kennedy. Hamilton and Kennedy are the bigger names from a fantasy perspective. The change of scenery in KC hasn't helped Hamilton at all, but Kennedy has been a pleasant surprise with a 3.32 ERA, 14 saves, 46 strikeouts and only nine walks in 38 innings over 37 outings for the Royals this year. A move out of KC, however, would likely be the end of his fantasy value, as he'd be unlikely to serve as a closer for a contender. Diekman, a lefty, has struggled to a 4.97 ERA as a setup man. Kevin McCarthy and Wily Peralta could be in line for saves if one or both of Kennedy and Diekman are dealt within the next two weeks.
