Ronald Torreyes Starts, Gleyber Torres Sits Wednesday
6 years agoNew York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres will be given a day off on Wednesday as the slumping rookie will give way to a familiar face. Ronald Torreyes, a fan favorite who was surprisingly demoted earlier this season will make his first start since returning to the major league club earlier this week. Torres, an All-Star in his first season, has seriously struggled since returning from a right hip strain in late July. In his last 30 games, the 21-year-old is hitting .200 and has been even worse as of late, recording just two hits in his last seven games. Torreyes, meanwhile, is a utility player capable of playing multiple positions. In 24 games this season, he was hitting .323 coming after a 2017 campaign that saw him hit .292 in 108 games. Starting at second base, he'll bat ninth against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.
