Rockies Set To Acquire Austin Gomber
4 years agoThe Colorado Rockies are finalizing a blockbuster deal that would send All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for left-hander Austin Gomber and low-level prospects. The 27-year-old was excellent in a swing role for the Cardinals in 2020, posting a 1.86 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 27 strikeouts and 15 walks in 14 appearances (four starts) over 29 innings. Power-hitting first base prospect Luken Baker's name was initially reported as part of the package, but he is not expected to be dealt. Outfielder Jhon Torres, the Cardinals No. 9 prospect is also part of the package, while No. 13 prospect Angel Rondon and right-hander Jake Woodford could also be involved in the trade. Gomber should be stretched out enough to give the Rockies the option of putting him in their starting rotation if they choose, but the southpaw could struggle at Coors Field after he had a 4.75 xFIP last year in St. Louis.
