Red Wings Select Jonatan Berggren 33rd Overall
7 years agoWith the 33rd overall pick, the Detroit Red Wings selected speed and skill in Jonatan Berggren. Coming from the Skelleftea AIK Jr. program, the 5-foot-10, 181-pound winger is chock full of creativity, boasting silky smooth hands and agile skating. On his under-20 team last season, Berggren posted 18 goals and 39 assists in 38 games. Berggren was then called up to the SHL, where he got a small sample of Sweden’s top professional league. At the World U18 Championship, Berggren was a leader on the Swedish team and tied for third in tournament scoring with five goals and as many assists in seven games. Berggren can quarterback play and impose his will with smooth skating and great passing, but this undersized winger will have the same looming question against him as most other European skaters: Can he translate his game to a smaller rink? Detroit’s 2018 development camp will be the first opportunity to assess this claim. Berggren certainly has a skill set to be an impactful creative winger, but he is likely more than a year away from NHL ice time.
