Red Sox Sign Collin McHugh To One-Year Deal
5 years agoThe Boston Red Sox signed pitcher Collin McHugh to a one-year contract, the team announced on Thursday. To make room on the 40-man roster, Boston designated pitcher Hector Velazquez for assignment. McHugh comes to the Sox after spending the last six seasons with the Houston Astros. In those six years, the 32-year-old went 58-35 with a 3.65 ERA across 195 appearances, including 110 starts. More recently, McHugh took on a bullpen role with Houston, including 2019 where he made 35 appearances with eight starts and went 4-5 with 4.70 ERA. Boston should look for McHugh to start but it’s unlikely he’ll be ready to begin the season in the rotation, as he was just cleared to start throwing in late February, following an elbow procedure. The righty has proven to be an innings eater with strikeout upside, but his 1.219 WHIP in Houston leaves some to be desired. Once he is healthy with a role established, he should be considered a solid streaming option.
