10 months agoSt. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect Quinn Mathews was a fourth-round pick in 2023. Although he didn't make his pro debut until this April, he's already appeared in RotoBaller's Hot Prospects to Watch series three times, which is the highest mark among any player this season. The southpaw has a low-90s fastball and rounds out his repertoire with a curveball, slider, and changeup. Of those secondary options, the changeup is the best, though all three can be effective. Mathews flashed decent control in college and has racked up strikeouts so far this year, all while keeping his walk rate relatively low. Mathews' latest outing thrust him right back into the spotlight. He struck out six batters over six shutout innings, surrendering just two hits and plunking one batter. He's been one of the most overachieving pitching prospects this season and is destined for a promotion to Double-A sooner rather than later.--Andersen Pickard - RotoBaller

1 month agoSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher prospect Quinn Mathews made his spring debut on Tuesday, tossing two innings of scoreless ball in a 3-2 Grapefruit League loss to the Blue Jays. The southpaw yielded two hits and one walk while striking out three in the outing. The Stanford product was a fourth-round draft pick for the Cardinals in 2023 but didn't see his first professional game action until 2024. The 6-foot-5 hurler began the season at Single-A but advanced all the way to Triple-A by season's end after showing elite strikeout rates at each stop, finishing with 202 strikeouts (35.4 percent K%) over 143 1/3 innings of work. His command faltered a bit when he arrived at Triple-A which likely prevented a late-season call-up in 2024, but a 2025 debut is looking more and more likely. The 24-year-old could be a viable source of Ks whenever he gets the call, so fantasy managers will want to keep an ear to the ground for any rumblings of a major league promotion once the regular season begins, but as it stands now without a rotation spot, he isn't on the draft radar in standard 12-team leagues.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBaller

2 months agoAccording to the team, St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect Quinn Mathews is being invited to spring training. Mathews enjoyed a fantastic campaign last summer and is a budding ace in the Cardinals system. The former fourth-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft made his professional debut with Single-A last season. However, the southpaw progressed through the entire pipeline and finished the season by getting a brief taste of Triple-A. The left-handed pitcher looked sharp at Double-A as he held a 2.41 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP with 70 strikeouts across 52 2/3 innings. He struggled in Triple-A, as he allowed 12 runs through 16 frames. However, seeing the 24-year-old progress at that pace in his first professional season is impressive. Earlier this offseason, it was reported that the Cardinals had already begun trade discussions with starting pitchers Erick Fedde and Steven Matz. This could open the door for an early 2025 debut, especially if he can turn the corner at Triple-A.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

4 months agoAccording to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Dispatch, starting pitching prospect Quinn Mathews will receive a non-roster invite to Spring Training. This is a great sign, as Mathews could have a great opportunity to make the Opening Day roster. The southpaw is considered one of the top pitching prospects in the sport and was named Baseball America's top pitching prospect of the 2024 season. The 24-year-old opened the season with Single-A and eventually progressed all the way up to Triple-A by August. Across all four levels of the St. Louis system, the Stanford product carried a solid 2.76 ERA and a stellar 0.98 WHIP. He struck out an incredible 202 batters across 143 1/3 innings while giving up just 49 free passes. He spent the most time at Double-A, posting a 2.41 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. Given his elite strikeout upside, fantasy managers in deeper formats should pay close attention to Mathews as he may be a popular late-round target in drafts this offseason.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

7 months agoSt. Louis Cardinals left-handed pitching prospect Quinn Mathews has been promoted from Double-A Springfield to Triple-A Memphis. The 23-year-old southpaw starter will join his fourth team of the season after starting 2024 at Single-A Palm Beach. Mathews, the No. 60 overall prospect in baseball and St. Louis' No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline, is 8-3 on the year with a strong 2.27 ERA in 22 starts and leads all minor-league pitchers with 180 strikeouts in only 126 2/3 innings of work. The Stanford product has held a downright dominant 0.85 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and 49 strikeouts with only five walks in his last 31 2/3 innings at Springfield. Mathews is one of the fastest-rising pitching prospects in the game and could spend considerable time in the Cardinal's starting rotation at the big-league level in 2025. Stash him now in dynasty/keeper leagues if he's available.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
