Pit-Road Penalty Hurts Michael McDowell At Richmond
1 year agoDespite a disappointing 22nd-place finish in Sunday's Cook Out 400, Michael McDowell still remains in the top 16 of the NASCAR playoff standings. While finishing 22nd isn't terrible in this particular instance, it was a letdown due to missed opportunities. McDowell started at 18th but used a bold pit strategy that kept him on the track while other drivers pitted. The goal of the strategy, as explained on the Motor Racing Network (MRN), was to reduce the number of overall stops while also ensuring a fresh set of sticker tires for later in the race. At first, the strategy worked well, and McDowell led nine laps. However, a pit-road penalty on Lap 238 resulted in the No. 34 Ford Mustang falling to the back of the pack, putting an end to a potentially fantastic day for Front Row Motorsports.
