Phillies Interested In Seth Lugo As A Reliever
2 years agoThe Philadelphia Phillies are showing interest in free-agent right-hander Seth Lugo, but likely as a relief pitcher. Lugo prefers to start and has received a lot of interest this offseason for a rotation spot, with the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals among his other suitors. The 33-year-old veteran was very solid for the New York Mets the last two years strictly as a reliever, posting a 3.56 ERA (3.77 FIP), a 1.22 WHIP, four saves and 124 strikeouts in 111 1/3 innings over 108 appearances out of the bullpen. Lugo wouldn't be a closing candidate in a revamped Phillies bullpen if he lands there. The best guess is that he's holding out for a starting gig elsewhere. He has made 38 career starts in seven major-league seasons, with his most recent start coming back in 2020.
