Peter Alonso Making A Case For Opening Day Roster
6 years agoNew York Mets first baseman Peter Alonso, the team's top prospect and No. 51 overall per MLB Pipeline, is making a strong case to be on the team's Opening Day roster by hitting .368 with three home runs and four doubles in 14 Grapefruit League games. It's still unknown if he'll start the year at Triple-A, but the fact that Todd Frazier (oblique) might not be ready for the regular season helps Alonso's chances. The 24-year-old doesn't have much left to prove on the farm after hitting .285/.395/.579 with 36 home runs and 119 RBI in 132 games with Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Las Vegas. He could make an immediate splash in mixed leagues for his power and should eventually be in the majors this year.
