3 months agoIndianapolis Colts wide receiver Adonai Mitchell impressed during the preseason and is trending toward being the team's primary slot receiver when the regular season kicks off this week, according to fantasy football analyst Jared Smola. Indianapolis spent a second-round pick on the Texas product, and it now appears he's poised to start in place of the injured Josh Downs (ankle). Even with a starting role, Mitchell might not be worth deploying right away in fantasy football. He's still behind Michael Pittman Jr. in the receiver room, and he'll also lose some opportunities to rushing threats Jonathan Taylor and Anthony Richardson.Source: Jared Smola
3 months agoIndianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen said that kicker Matt Gay (hamstring) is dealing with a hamstring injury, which is why kicker Spencer Shrader was added to the practice squad. Gay's status for the Week 1 regular-season opener on Sunday against the division-rival Houston Texans is to be determined. If the 30-year-old ends up playing this weekend, he'll be a borderline fantasy starter in 12-team leagues after making just 80.5% of his 41 field-goal attempts during 17 regular-season games while missing just one of his 36 extra-point tries. If Gay is held out of the season opener, fantasy managers should pass on Shrader and look for a replacement on the waiver wire. We'll have a much better idea of Gay's Sunday status later this week after the team completes a couple official practices. Check back for those injury reports to see if Gay can practice.Source: The Athletic - James Boyd
3 months agoIndianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs (ankle) is "progressing well" as he continues to rehab a high-ankle sprain, according to head coach Shane Steichen, but there's no indication as to whether he'll actually take part in the team's first official practice of the 2024 regular season on Wednesday. We will have a better idea of Downs' status for Week 1 of the regular season on Sunday against the division-rival Houston Texans after Indy releases their injury report on Wednesday, but as of now, the 23-year-old is completely up in the air for this weekend. Fantasy managers that have Downs rostered should plan as if Downs won't suit up and go from there. If he's unavailable or limited for the Colts against Houston, expect to see rookie Adonai Mitchell and Alec Pierce lined up in three-wide sets alongside starter Michael Pittman Jr.Source: FOX 59 - Mike Chappell
3 months agoFormer Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Buffalo Bills running back Leonard Fournette is visiting with the Indianapolis Colts on Monday, according to a source. As things stand in Indy right now, Jonathan Taylor is the unquestioned starter, with Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson backing him up. Fournette signed late in the year in 2023 with the Bills and played in only two games with them, carrying the ball 12 times for 40 yards. In 2022 with the Bucs, Lenny averaged 3.5 yards per carry on the ground on his 189 attempts while running for 668 yards and three touchdowns. He added 73 receptions for 523 yards and three more scores. The 29-year-old would likely have to work his way to the active roster in Indy if he signs with the team and he could eventually become an interesting bench stash in deep PPR leagues. For now, fantasy managers in standard-sized leagues can continue to ignore him.Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
3 months agoIndianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce has been receiving high praise from head coach Shane Steichen regarding his consistency through training camp, according to Nate Atkins of the Indy Star. In addition, general manager Chris Ballard has also expressed praise for the third-year wideout. In the final preseason game, Pierce caught both of his targets from quarterback Anthony Richardson and is currently listed as the No. 3 option on the depth chart. If Josh Downs (ankle) is not cleared to play in the season opener, Pierce could see a significant uptick in work along with rookie wideout Adonai Mitchell. If Pierce can establish himself as a reliable No. 3 pass-catcher in this offense, he could be worth stashing in deeper leagues.Source: Nate Atkins

3 months agoIndianapolis Colts running back Trey Sermon (hamstring) is practicing with the team on Wednesday. With Sermon returning to practice on Wednesday, he should be ready to go for the Week 1 regular-season opener in the first week of September. The 25-year-old injured his hamstring in the team's preseason opener on Aug. 11 and sat out the final two preseason contests as a result. Before his injury, though, he was trending as the club's RB2 behind starter Jonathan Taylor. It remains to be seen if that's still the case and if he's ahead of Tyler Goodson on Indy's RB depth chart. The former third-rounder out of Ohio State is probably nothing more than a handcuff option in the very deepest of fantasy leagues for managers that have Taylor rostered. In his first year in Indy in 2023, Sermon had 35 carries for 160 yards (4.6 yards per tote) and caught three passes for 13 yards in 14 games.Source: The Athletic - James Boyd
3 months agoThe Indianapolis Colts waived running back Evan Hull on roster cutdown day on Tuesday, according to a source. Hull did not make the 53-man roster out of training camp after he was selected in the fifth round last year out of Northwestern. In his rookie campaign, the 23-year-old only appeared in one game and had one carry for a one-yard pickup while catching his only target for a six-yard pickup before suffering a knee injury that kept him out the rest of the way. It would be surprising if the speedy and powerful back didn't land elsewhere for RB depth, and at the worst, he'll return to the Colts' practice squad after losing out to Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson as the backups to starter Jonathan Taylor. Hull is more of a short-yardage, between-the-tackles runner than he is a pass-catching option out in space.Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

3 months agoIndianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs (ankle) is uncertain to be available for the season opener, according to head coach Shane Steichen. Downs has been sidelined since he suffered a high-ankle sprain in early August. The 23-year-old appears to be making progress, but he still has more work to do before being ready to play. The absence of Downs is a blow to this offense considering he registered 68 receptions for 772 yards in 17 games last season. If he misses time, Alec Pierce and Adonai Mitchell would both see a boost in targets and fantasy value early in the season.Source: James Boyd
3 months agoThe Indianapolis Colts cut wide receiver Greg Ward on Sunday. The 29-year-old spent his entire career in Philadelphia, appearing in 40 games and amassing 768 yards off 88 catches. He also had 10 touchdowns, including six during the 2020-21 campaign. Ward signed with the Colts during the offseason. However, While things didn't work out in Indy, he may find work in the near future. With that said, he's not worth adding in any fantasy format, including dynasty setups.Source: Ian Rapoport

3 months agoIndianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs (ankle) suffered a high-ankle sprain a couple of weeks ago and was expected to miss two to four weeks. During the team's most recent practice, Downs did not have a boot on his ankle anymore, reports Jake Arthur of Sports Illustrated. The second-year receiver was in a boot and sometimes used a scooter to get around, so his ankle injury seems to be progressing in the right direction. He was still held out of the team's game on Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals, but his timetable at least seems to be following the two- to four-week timetable that they initially announced. Downs should get plenty of work in the slot alongside Michael Pittman Jr. and Alec Pierce when healthy. He's currently ranked as the 62nd WR in RotoBaller's half-PPR rankings.Source: Jake Arthur
3 months agoIndianapolis Colts running back Demetric Felton ran the ball four times for 44 yards and a touchdown in the team's win against the Bengals. Felton also caught both of his targets for an additional eight yards through the air. Felton struggled with his first three carries, netting just four yards, eventually taking his final carry 40 yards for a touchdown to help seal the win for Indy. Felton didn't see action until the fourth quarter, playing behind Jonathan Taylor, Tyler Goodson, and Evan Hull, indicating he might be on the outside looking in for a spot in the rotation this season. That being said, with the injury to Trey Sermon (hamstring), the RB2 role is up for grabs and Felton made his case for it with his performance.Source: ESPN
