4 months agoThe Los Angeles Chargers officially signed rookie first-round offensive tackle Joe Alt to a four-year, $33.2 million deal on Monday after he was selected fifth overall in April's NFL draft. Alt was predictably the first offensive tackle off the board in 2024. Although he should eventually be a starting left tackle in the NFL, he'll initially start at right tackle in Los Angeles under new head coach Jim Harbaugh in LA with Rashawn Slater at left tackle. The Bolts are hoping Alt will be part of a much-improved offensive line this year with an added emphasis on the ground game to take pressure off of young quarterback Justin Herbert. The 21-year-old Alt hails out of Notre Dame and stands at 6-foot-8 and 321 pounds. Alt showed in his college career that he can excel in both run-blocking and in pass protection.Source: Chargers.com
5 months agoLos Angeles Chargers wide receiver Joshua Palmer (knee), who has been rehabbing a knee injury that kept him out of six games last year, said he got the most repetitions of the offseason in Tuesday's organized team activities. After posting a career-best 58.1 receiving yards per game last year, Palmer's role is set to increase even more in 2024 now that both Mike Williams and Keenan Allen are out of town. However, he'll still be competing for targets with former first-rounder Quentin Johnston and second-round rookie Ladd McConkey, not to mention DJ Chark. The Bolts' offense is also transitioning to a run-first unit under head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman, so Palmer is far from a lock to break out this year. However, the 24-year-old's big-play ability makes him enticing as WR depth.Source: The Athletic - Daniel Popper
5 months agoVeteran center Corey Linsley, who is expected to announce his retirement this offseason, was released by the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday. The two-time All-Pro selection spent the last three seasons with L.A. after seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers. Linsley played just three games in 2023 due to a heart-related health issue, and the 32-year-old looks to be headed toward life after football. Overall, the former fifth-round pick started in 132 games and was viewed as one of the game's best centers over the last decade.Source: NFL.com
5 months agoLos Angeles Chargers former first-round wide receiver Quentin Johnston had a pretty dreadful first season in the NFL and was plagued by some key drops, ultimately finishing with 38 catches for 431 yards and two touchdowns despite both Mike Williams and Keenan Allen missing time with injuries. In addition to drops, the 6-foot-4, 215-pounder was pushed around physically. Johnston called his play "straight-up unacceptable" and is determined to turn things around in Year 2. The good news for fantasy managers in dynasty/keeper leagues is that the Chargers' new brass has been praising the 22-year-old's positive attributes and are going to give him every chance to excel. The bad news for Johnston's 2024 fantasy upside is that he's now in a run-first offense under new head coach Jim Harbaugh. Still, he'll have his chances and is worth a late-round flier with both Williams and Allen no longer in town.Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra
5 months agoVeteran free-agent safety Tony Jefferson will try out for the Los Angeles Chargers roster during the team's upcoming minicamp, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. After nine NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, and New York Giants, Jefferson announced his retirement in May of 2023. He announced plans to attempt a comeback in May of 2024, and he'll look to crack L.A.'s roster this offseason. Although Jefferson has never made a Pro Bowl or been named to an All-Pro team, he's been a solid and productive player, racking up 491 tackles, 9.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, four interceptions, and 24 pass deflections in 113 career games. If he makes the offseason roster, he'll still have an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster. If he does that, he'll likely be utilized as a depth safety and veteran leader for a rebuilding organization.Source: Jordan Schultz
5 months agoFree-agent offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood signed with the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday, according to NFL insider Ari Meirov. The former Raiders first-round pick in 2021 out of Alabama is set to join his fourth NFL team in as many years, but landing with an organization going through a rebuild could help him turn his career around. The 25-year-old won the 2020 Outland Trophy, which is given to college football's most outstanding interior lineman, and he was a first-team All-American while playing in the SEC. The Bolts are looking to become a physical football team under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, so it'll be interesting to see if Leatherwood can carve out a role in 2024.Source: Ari Meirov -- 33rd Team
5 months agoLos Angeles Chargers rookie second-round wide receiver Ladd McConkey is already developing a connection with quarterback Justin Herbert at organized team activities this week. McConkey played both inside and outside on Monday, but the majority of his snaps with the first-team offense came in the slot. The 22-year-old from Georgia has a real opportunity to become a key piece of the Chargers' passing game in his rookie season with both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams moving on in the offseason. He should start in three-wide sets with second-year wideout Quentin Johnston and Joshua Palmer, and McConkey's speed and versatility could make him a reliable target for Herbert. The Bolts figure to run the ball more under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, but McConkey is in a situation to be worth taking a late-round flier on in deeper fantasy leagues this fall.Source: The Athletic - Daniel Popper
5 months agoLos Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert already appears to be developing a nice connection with rookie second-round wide receiver Ladd McConkey. McConkey played both inside and outside at organized team activities on Monday, with the majority of his snaps with the first-team offense coming out of the slot. All of the Bolts' offseason moves have led to Herbert's fantasy stock taking a pretty big hit as a QB1. The Chargers are expected to be a much more run-heavy offense under head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman, and Herbert also lost both top receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. The 26-year-old signal-caller could still have big performances, especially if LA's offensive line provides more protection, but it's hard to argue that he'll have as much high-end upside in 2024.Source: The Athletic - Daniel Popper

5 months agoFree-agent linebacker Bud Dupree has reportedly signed a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. Dupree met with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons in addition to the Chargers. The 31-year-old has played with both the Steelers and Falcons during his career so it appears Dupree was looking for a new home. The veteran linebacker still has something left in the tank. He recorded 6.5 sacks last season with Atlanta. Those 6.5 sacks were the most for Dupree since the 2020 season. His addition should be a solid boost for this defensive unit heading into next season.Source: Los Angeles Chargers
6 months agoFree-agent wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is scheduled to visit the Chargers on Monday. The 29-year-old had six trips to the end zone in 2020 while still a member of the Green Bay Packers. Since then, he hasn't come close to that mark. He finished the 2023-24 campaign with Kansas City by posting career-lows in catches (21), receiving yards (315), and touchdowns (one). Valdes-Scantling's most notable contribution last season came in the postseason, with the 2018 No. 174 overall pick pulling in a 16-yard touchdown throw from Patrick Mahomes in the Chiefs 25-22 overtime win over the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. Nonetheless, MVS will likely find work this season. But it will be difficult to tell how things will look from a fantasy standpoint until he inks a deal, although he could get looks from Justin Herbert if he signs with Los Angeles, considering the team no longer has Keenan Allen or Mike Williams on the roster.Source: Ari Meirov

6 months agoThe Los Angeles Chargers officially picked up left tackle Rashawn Slater's fifth-year option for the 2025 season on Thursday. Slater, who was taken with the 13th overall pick in 2021 out of Northwestern, was a Pro Bowler in his rookie season before playing in just three games in 2022 due to a torn biceps. The 25-year-old returned last year to start all 17 games for the Chargers while protecting quarterback Justin Herbert's blind side. The Bolts added offensive tackle Joe Alt with the fifth overall pick in this year's draft, but he will shift over to right tackle as long as Slater remains healthy. If he returns to his rookie-year form and Alt lives up to his draft stock, LA's new run-first offense should be in excellent shape to begin the Jim Harbaugh era in 2024.Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero
