2 weeks agoNew York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin has agreed to an eight-year extension with the team. He'll be paid $92 million over the course of the deal, making it the largest goalie contract in NHL history. With the new contract, Shesterkin's salary cap hit will rise to $11.5 million. The Russian netminder is currently on a four-year, $22.67 million deal, which expires at the end of the season. Shesterkin has certainly earned a big pay raise after developing into one of the best goalies in the world. He's sporting a 143-68-18 career record with a 2.48 goals-against average, a .920 save percentage, and 16 shutouts. The 2024-25 campaign has been a bit tricky for Shesterkin, as he carries an 8-9-1 record, but with his future now sorted, we might see an improvement in form from the Rangers' No. 1 glove.Source: ESPN
2 weeks agoThe Anaheim Ducks have acquired defenseman Jacob Trouba from the New York Rangers. Defenseman Urho Vaakanainen (upper body) and a conditional 2025 fourth-round pick went in the other direction. The trade was agreed only a couple of hours after the Rangers planned to keep their captain out of Friday's contest against Pittsburgh for "roster management purposes." It was speculated that the club might waive him. Anaheim took on Trouba's entire contract, which carries an $8 million average annual value through the 2025-26 season. Trouba has had a couple of tough campaigns in New York, but he now gets a fresh start and can prove his worth again. 2 weeks agoPhiladelphia Flyers right wing Matvei Michkov finished Thursday's 7-5 loss to Florida with three assists. He produced all the helpers in the second frame, becoming the youngest player in franchise history with three-plus assists in a single period. The 19-year-old Russian had a power-play assist when Tyson Foerster scored and picked up two even-strength helpers on a pair of Owen Tippett strikes. Michkov has struggled to produce offense during even-strength play during his rookie campaign, but he's steadily improving in that regard. The skillful winger paces all first-year players with 22 points (nine goals, 13 assists) through 24 appearances. He's recorded 10 points (four goals, six assists) on the power play.Source: ESPN
2 weeks agoFlorida Panther winger Matthew Tkachuk had a field day against Philadelphia on Thursday, finishing a 7-5 road victory with five points. He collected four assists, three with the man advantage, and capped off the scoring in the contest with an empty-net goal. Following a four-point effort in the previous game against Pittsburgh, Tkachuk became the first player in Panthers history with nine points over a two-game span. The two massive performances are part of a five-game point streak. Tkachuk, who has registered 28 points (eight goals, 20 assists) in 22 games for the season, has looked back to his best lately and should do further damage on Saturday against a Sharks that has just allowed eight goals to Tampa Bay and has the fifth leakiest defense overall this season.Source: ESPN
2 weeks agoTampa Bay Lightning center Brayden Point recorded his second career four-assist game in Thursday's 8-1 win over San Jose. He helped set up a power-play goal for Jake Guentzel and notched three even-strength assists as Anthony Cirelli, Nick Perbix, and Nicholas Paul found the back of the net. Point became the fifth player in franchise history with multiple four-assist games. The Lightning star has mostly done his scoring via goals this season, lighting the lamp 16 times, which puts him tied for third on the league's goal-scoring charts. Strangely, Point didn't have a single assist in nine November outings. He's managed 25 points (16 goals, nine assists) in 20 games over the course of the season.Source: ESPN
2 weeks agoCarolina Hurricanes winger Andrei Svechnikov stole the show against Colorado on Thursday, leading all skaters with a career-high four points in a 5-3 win. Svechnikov racked up three assists, two on the power play, before capping off his career night with an empty-net goal. The big performance ended a four-game point drought for Svechnikov. The Russian forward hasn't been a regular on the score sheet in recent games, but he won't have many complaints about the season overall. In 26 appearances, Svechnikov has contributed nine goals and 13 assists. Half of his 22 points have come with the man advantage. 2 weeks agoEdmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid tallied four assists in Thursday's high-scoring 6-3 win over Columbus. In the process, McDavid became only the fourth player in NHL history to register 120-plus assists in a calendar year. Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Adam Oates were previously the only players to achieve it. It was his 10th career four-assist game. The Oilers captain had a quiet start to the season by his standards but is certainly firing on all cylinders now. In his last 12 appearances, McDavid has totaled nine goals and 16 assists. 2 weeks agoMontreal Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault celebrated his selection to Canada's 4 Nations Face-Off team with his third shutout of the season, stopping 29 shots in Thursday's 3-0 win over Nashville. He joined Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck as the second goaltender in the league with more than two shutouts this season. Montembeault has been in fine form, allowing 2.82 goals with a .906 save percentage, but the team's weaknesses in other areas mean that he still carries a losing record with 8-10-2. He missed his first game of the season Thursday versus Montreal, and unfortunately, O'Reilly isn't expected to make a quick return. The veteran forward has bagged 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 26 outings this season, putting him third in scoring on the team. Steven Stamkos took on first-line center duties on Thursday, with Fedor Svechkov slotting into the second line. 2 weeks agoEdmonton Oilers defenseman Troy Stecher (ear) is expected to play against Columbus on Thursday. He was injured in Tuesday's 1-0 loss to Vegas when a puck hit Stecher's ear. Stecher recently put together a three-game assists streak. These are his lone points in 21 outings this season. Without the puck, he has recorded 25 blocks and 15 hits in 21 games. Hyman's efforts have brought three goals and five assists in 20 outings this season. He's been one of the biggest disappointments in fantasy hockey. However, despite his lack of form, Hyman will be trusted in a first-line role on Thursday. He's also set to skate with the first power-play unit. Back spasms limited Dahlin to only 17:16 of action on Tuesday against Colorado, and he isn't game-ready for Thursday, missing his first contest of the campaign. Dennis Gilbert will take Dahlin's spot in the lineup, with Jacob Bryson projected to replace the Swedish rearguard on the first defensive pairing. He's set to become a father for the second time and is currently away from the team. Panthers head coach Paul Maurice is hopeful that Bobrovsky might be back for Saturday's meeting with San Jose. Spencer Knight will pick up a third consecutive start on Thursday. He's had a couple of completely different outings in the past two games. The 23-year-old registered his first shutout of the season last Saturday in a 6-0 win over Carolina but was lit up for five goals on 16 shots in Tuesday's 5-4 overtime loss against Pittsburgh.
