Orioles Not Committing To Late-Inning Bullpen Roles
6 years agoBaltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde isn't ready to commit to late-inning bullpen roles just yet. Relief pitcher Mychal Givens, who is the favorite for saves in Baltimore, will be deployed in "high-leverage" situations, but Hyde said he "won't manage to the save stat." More managers are starting to take this approach with their bullpen, which is bad news for fantasy owners. Givens was 0-7 with a 3.99 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, nine saves and 9.3 K/9 in 69 outings for the O's last year. Going with the best arm in the bullpen on one of baseball's worst teams isn't exactly a smart strategy, especially if Givens might not even be pitching the ninth inning regularly when the team has a lead.
