Nomar Mazara DFA'd, Willi Castro Optioned Friday
3 years agoIn a series of roster moves on Friday, the Detroit Tigers designated outfielder Nomar Mazara for assignment and optioned infielder Willi Castro to Triple-A Toledo. Outfielder Derek Hill and infielder Isaac Paredes were called up from Toledo in corresponding roster moves. For Mazara, the 26-year-old hasn't been able to recapture his form since leaving Texas two years ago. Mazara averaged over 19 homers and 77 RBI with a .261 batting average in four seasons with the Rangers. In 50 games for the Tigers, Mazara posted three homers, 19 RBI, 12 runs scored and a .212/.276/.321 slash line. For Castro, the demotion comes as a disappointment due to his sleeper status entering 2021. The 24-year-old has six homers, 28 RBI, 34 runs scored and four stolen bases with a .214/.278/.341 line in 280 plate appearances this season compared to six homers, 24 RBI and 21 runs scored with a .349/.381/.550 line in 140 plate appearances in 2020. Both Hill and Paredes are in the starting lineup for Game 1 of the doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins on Friday. Hill could have some value in AL-only leagues if he's able to build on his strong season at Triple-A.
