8 months agoPittsburgh Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales (groin) will be placed on the 10-day injured list after leaving Saturday's game with a groin injury. Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said on a radio show that he believes the injury is not season-ending but it could be weeks before Gonzalez returns from the injured list. The 25-year-old is hitting .258 with five homers and 39 RBI this season in 65 games for the Pirates. It sounds like this will be a lengthy absence for Gonzales. Fantasy managers may want to look into a replacement the rest of the way this season.--Brian Buckey - RotoBaller

1 week agoPittsburgh Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales (ankle) went 1-for-3 with his first home run of the season, a run scored, two RBI and two strikeouts in the team's 5-4 loss to the Miami Marlins on Opening Day on Thursday, but he was also removed early due to recurrent left-ankle discomfort. Gonzales went deep for a two-run homer in the sixth inning and hobbled around the bases before being pulled. The 25-year-old will be examined by the team's medical staff before the Bucs provide an update on his status. Consider him day-to-day for now, but we'd be surprised if he's back in the starting lineup on Friday in Miami. Veteran Adam Frazier took over for Gonzales at the keystone on Thursday and walked in his only plate appearance. If Gonzales is forced to miss extended time with his ankle injury, Frazier would likely take over as the regular at second base in Pittsburgh.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoPittsburgh Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales is viewed as the team's primary second baseman. Last season, Gonzales logged a career-high 94 games at the MLB level and is poised to surpass that total in 2025. Across this stint last season, Gonzales held a .270/.311/.398 line with 19 doubles and seven home runs. He swiped five bags while holding an underwhelming 18:74 BB:K. He generated a strong .270 xBA which placed him in the 84th percentile among qualified hitters. The former seventh round selection of the 2020 MLB Draft also flashed elite speed as he placed in the 93rd percentile in sprint speed. However, from a power perspective, he posted a modest 36.9 percent hard-hit rate. Gonzales is a solid late-round middle infield option as he will have an everyday spot in the Pittsburgh lineup.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

7 months agoPittsburgh Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales (groin) was activated from the 10-day injured list on Monday. The team designated right-hander Jake Woodford for assignment in a corresponding move. The 25-year-old infielder landed on the shelf on July 28 with a groin pull but will return to being Pittsburgh's everyday starter at the keystone now that he's healthy. The former seventh overall pick in 2020 out of New Mexico State didn't make his 2024 debut until May 10. In his 248 at-bats this year, he's hit .258/.293/.387 with a .680 OPS, only five home runs, 39 RBI and 28 runs scored. Gonzales' counting stats don't stand out, but he can be a useful middle infielder in deep-mixed and NL-only leagues for the final month of the season in an everyday role. He is back at second base on Monday and is hitting cleanup against Chicago Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

8 months agoPittsburgh Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales (groin) will join Triple-A Indianapolis in Nashville later this week and start a minor-league rehab assignment next week. The Pirates put Gonzales on the 10-day injured list at the end of July due to a strained left groin, but he's apparently feeling much better and will resume playing in games next week. Barring a setback, it's possible that the 25-year-old will return to starting duties at the keystone in Pittsburgh by next weekend. However, with the recent trade acquisition of utility infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Gonzales may be in more of a battle for playing time than he was before his injury. The former seventh overall pick in 2020 out of New Mexico State didn't make his 2024 debut until May 10 and has hit .258 (64-for-248) with five home runs, 39 RBI and 28 runs scored in 65 games in just his second year in the majors.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
