The New York Mets announced the firings of hitting coach Chili Davis and assistant hitting coach Tom Slater late on Monday night, according to Justin Toscano of NorthJersey.com. The announcement came less than an hour after the Mets recorded seven hits in a 6-5 loss to the Cardinals, as Hugh Quattlebaum has been named the new hitting coach and Kevin Howard was named the assistant hitting coach. Entering Monday, the Mets had a .241 team average (ninth-best in MLB) and a .322 on-base percentage (seventh-best), but their .364 slugging percentage ranked the fourth-lowest in the majors. Even without the coaching change, the Mets were likely due for an improvement in their power hitting as they have a .434 xSLG — the 16th-best mark in the majors. Managers should keep an eye on how the team performs over the next week, to see if there might be some good buy-low opportunities with Mets batters.--Michael
