Mookie Betts Opens Up About Boston Years
4 years agoIn an interview with GQ, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts discussed his early professional baseball years coming up with the Boston Red Sox. He said that in his first few years with the organization, he felt that he was "just trash" and added that he "pretty much almost quit baseball." Betts had a rough full first season in the minor leagues as a 19-year-old in 2012. Over 71 games at Low-A, he slashed .267/.352/.307 with no home runs, but he stole 20 bases and had just 30 strikeouts compared with 32 walks. He signed up to take the ACT with college on his mind, but was forced to reschedule the exam and after that scheduling change, he adjusted his swing and became a new hitter. He hit 15 home runs and slugged .506 at Single-A and High-A in 2013. Betts also said he had no regrets about his time in Boston, saying that Boston "didn't owe me anything; I didn't owe them anything....We did what we were supposed to do. And at that point, it's a business."
