6 years agoChicago Cubs starting pitcher Mike Montgomery (shoulder) made his first outing on the day he was activated Thursday versus Atlanta. He would only last 4 1/3 innings while allowing four runs but he did fan six batters. Despite the box score, he had his moment flashing his potential. He is now 4-4 with a 3.82 this season which includes 14 starts. With Yu Darvish unlikely to return this season, Montgomery could be forced to stay in the rotation unless Tyler Chatwood finds a way to regain enough control to be trusted. The reason for the term "forced" is the reports before the injury that the Cubs would prefer to limit Montgomery's innings down the stretch and turn him more into more of an option out of the bullpen.--Jamie Mellor
