Kicking off the second round in Dallas, the Buffalo Sabres drafted Mattias Samuelsson, a product of the U.S. National Team Development Program. The towering left-shooting defenseman stands at 6-foot-4 and 217 pounds and is the son of Kjell Samuelsson, who played nearly 1,000 NHL games. Drafted by Sarnia of the OHL, Samuelsson elected to stay in the U.S. program and will attend Western Michigan. His defensive game stands out, but he’ll continue to develop his offensive abilities and could be a very dependable top-four blue liner. Having committed to college, it remains to be seen how many years removed he is from an NHL berth. He has NHL size already, something you can’t teach, but the Sabres will likely look for him to develop further before pulling him from his college team.--Kevin AcornRead More News
