Matt Breida Emerging As Lead Back
6 years agoAfter a three-week timeshare with fellow San Francisco 49ers running back Alfred Morris, Matt Breida (shoulder) was the choice back in Week 4, out-touching Morris 12 to four. Breida is third in rushing yards (313) but only 28th in carries (41). He leads the NFL with 7.6 yards per carry and six rushes of 20-plus yards. Breida’s also contributed in the passing game with 10 catches for 85 yards. The Niners face the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5 who have allowed a putrid 141.3 yards per game and league-worst seven touchdowns on the ground. With second-year quarterback C.J. Beathard at the helm and a battered receiving corps, the Niners may lean heavily on Breida. He has a golden opportunity to separate himself from Morris and emerge as an every-week RB2.
