Mark Melancon Collects MLB-Leading Fifth Save
4 years agoSan Diego Padres closer Mark Melancon notched his major league-leading fifth save Sunday against the Texas Rangers. The 36-year-old breezed through the Rangers 8-9-1 batters in order, collecting a strikeout to cement his fifth perfect inning in six appearances. Along with the scoreless resume, Melancon holds a pristine 0.17 WHIP with five punchouts and zero walks. Despite not missing many bats, the veteran has maintained excellent batted-ball outcomes, limiting barrels and inducing grounders. Even with relievers Emilio Pagan and Drew Pomeranz pitching well, Melancon is now the unequivocal ninth-inning guy in San Diego.
