Mallex Smith Steals First Base Tuesday
4 years agoSeattle Mariners outfielder Mallex Smith went 0-for-4, but reached on an error and stole his first base of the season in Tuesday's loss to the Angels. Smith has been a disappointment to start 2020 as he is 1-for-15 with no walks and six strikeouts. Though batting average and plate discipline have never been Smith's strong suits, his inability to reach base has been a big blow to fantasy owners who drafted him as their main steals source. There is hope in the underlying numbers though. So far Smith's BABIP is .111, which is terrible, however he has never had a BABIP under .302 in his career. His slugging percentage is also less than half of his career average. These numbers would suggest that Smith is running into some bad luck and should see some positive regression coming his way. If Smith is able to get back on track, the Mariners could bat him higher in the lineup which would increase his value even more.
