6 years agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Mallex Smith (illness) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday. The story evolved as the day went on, starting with Smith waking up feeling sick at 3 a.m. Friday morning. He would be held out of the lineup and sent to see the doctor. He ended up being hospitalized with a viral infection. The current prognosis is that he will spend a few days getting treated and this will not be a long-term issue. Smith had been batting .385 since August 5 when he was moved to the lead-off spot of the batting order. Smith is a high-average hitter with elite speed (27 steals). If you can afford to be without him for the 10 days, he could still help the last few weeks of the season.--Jamie Mellor
