10 months agoNew York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil continued his amazing season in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Twins. Gil pitched six shutout innings, allowing just one hit and three walks with six strikeouts. The 26-year-old is now 8-1 with a 1.82 ERA, an 11.03 K/9 rate, and a 4.41 BB/9 rate. It is unlikely that he will maintain a .178 BABIP throughout the season, but there is no doubt that he has been a huge surprise fantasy option. He has now turned in seven consecutive quality starts, although that streak will be put to the test in his next scheduled start against the Dodgers. Regardless, Gil should be started given how well he has pitched.--Connelly Doan - RotoBaller

2 weeks agoThe New York Yankees placed right-hander Luis Gil (lat) on the 60-day injured list on Monday with a right-lat strain and added newly-signed left-hander Ryan Yarbrough to the 40-man roster in a corresponding move, the team announced. After missing all of the 2023 season due to Tommy John surgery, the 26-year-old Gil returned last year to go 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA (4.14 FIP), a 1.19 WHIP, a career-high 171 strikeouts and a league-high 77 walks in 151 2/3 innings over 29 starts. Despite the lack of control, Gil was named the American League Rookie of the Year. However, the increased workload -- he had never thrown more than 29 1/3 frames in the big leagues -- may have gotten to him, as he won't be able to make his 2025 debut until at least June due to a high-grade lat strain. Injuries to New York's rotation have opened up spots for both Carlos Carrasco and Will Warren.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

1 month agoNew York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said it's going to be at least three months before the team gets right-hander Luis Gil (lat) back this year. The Yankees got another MRI exam on Gil this week, which confirmed what the team said originally of a high-grade lat strain and a six-week shutdown. Don't expect the 26-year-old to return to the Yankees' starting rotation until sometime in June, and that's assuming he doesn't have any setbacks. In the meantime, veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman figures to be the most likely option to take Gil's place in the Opening Day rotation, although Will Warren could make his case by finishing out spring training strong. The loss of Gil for multiple months to begin the 2025 season is a significant one, as he went 15-7 for the Yankees last year with a 3.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 171 strikeouts and 77 walks in 151 2/3 innings over 29 regular-season starts.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

1 month agoNew York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (lat) has been diagnosed with a high-grade right-lat strain and will not throw for at least six weeks, according to manager Aaron Boone. It's bad news for Gil and the depth of New York's starting rotation to begin the 2025 season. The 26-year-old will most likely miss the first couple months of the season because of this injury, which puts a big dent in his fantasy value for those with upcoming drafts. It's unclear exactly who will take Gil's spot in the starting rotation to open the year, but veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman makes the most sense. Gil won the American League Rookie of the Year in 2024 after going 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 171 strikeouts and a league-leading 77 walks in 151 2/3 innings over 29 starts after making only seven MLB starts in 2021 and 2022 combined. It was his first year back from Tommy John surgery, making his lat injury even more frustrating.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

1 month agoNew York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil (shoulder) has been shut down from throwing after feeling discomfort during a recent bullpen session. The team will have Gil undergo an MRI, so there should be a better timetable after that. The right-hander is reportedly feeling tightness in his right shoulder, but fantasy managers shouldn't panic yet. There is a chance that Gil does miss Opening Day, which is a shame considering Gil is expected to be a significant part of the rotation. Marcus Stroman might find his way into the rotation if Gil does miss time.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller
