Kyle Zimmer Earns His Second Save On Tuesday
3 years agoKansas City Royals relief pitcher Kyle Zimmer closed out the team's 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday to earn his second save of the year. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed one walk, no hits and no runs. It was an interesting development to see Zimmer get the save opportunity over Josh Staumont, who had earned the last five saves for the team. Staumont hasn't pitched since Saturday, so he was certainly available. Staumont struggled in that outing on Saturday, giving up four hits, a walk and two earned runs over one inning, albeit still preserving a 7-5 victory. Staumont should still be seen as the primary candidate for saves in Kansas City for now, but Tuesday's development might suggest that Zimmer is next in line behind Staumont. Zimmer has had a strong season with a 2.65 ERA and 0.82 WHIP over 17 innings. He's worth a speculative add in the deepest of leagues where saves are especially scarce.
