8 months agoChicago Cubs outfield prospect Kevin Alcantara will join fellow prospects Matt Shaw and James Triantos in Triple-A Iowa on Monday. Alcantara, 22, is the currently the Cubs No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline and has spent the entire season with Double-A Tennessee. With Tennessee, Alcantara hit a respectable .271 with nine homers, 39 RBI and nine stolen bases in 291 at-bats. Alcantara stands tall at 6'6, 188 pounds, offering plenty of athleticism to go along with his powerful bat. He has also improved on his plate discipline since last year, allowing him to continue to improve at the dish. Although he isn't the Cubs top prospect, he may have the highest ceiling of their position players and should be on the radar of dynasty league managers.--Daniel Burdeen - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoChicago Cubs outfield prospect Kevin Alcantara will not travel with the team to Tokyo. While the 22-year-old has not been officially optioned to Triple-A, this suggests he will likely open the 2025 campaign in the minor leagues. Alcantara is one of the top bats in the Chicago system. Last season, he made his brief MLB debut. Across three contests, he tallied just one hit. He spent most of his campaign with Double-A and held a strong .271/.342/.409 slash line with 13 doubles and nine home runs. Across 35 games with Triple-A Iowa, Alcantara held a stellar .292/.378/.469 line with eight doubles and five long balls. While Alcantara has flashed elite upside in the upper levels of the minor leagues, he will have trouble finding time in the majors given the depth in the Chicago outfield. He is worth monitoring in deeper NL-only formats but should not be targeted in any drafts.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

1 month agoChicago Cubs outfield prospect Kevin Alcantara went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI in Monday's 10-5 Cactus League win over the Padres. He's now 6-for-11 this spring with a pair of doubles and four RBI. The 22-year-old is putting his best foot forward in his audition to make the Cubs roster out of camp, but there isn't room for him in the outfield right now, so a start at Triple-A is more likely rather than having him get sporadic playing time on the bench. At this point, it is only a matter of time until he's roaming the outfield, though, as he'll surely be called upon if one of the regulars gets injured. The Dominican began at Double-A last season, but earned a promotion to Triple-A where he slashed .292/.378/.469 over 35 games (148 PA), then made a three-game cameo with the Cubs at the end of the year. The 6-foot-6 outfielder is ranked 90th overall per MLB.com's Top 100 Prospects list and has the potential to be a 20/20 player if given the proper playing time. Assuming he starts at Triple-A, redraft managers will want to be ready to pounce and grab him off of the waiver wire as soon as he gets the call.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBaller

1 month agoChicago Cubs outfield prospect Kevin Alcantara is expected to be the team's No. 2 option in center field to open the season. While former top prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong is slated to be the team's everyday center fielder, Alcantara could get the call if he struggles or suffers an injury. Alcantara is ranked as the No. 6 prospect in the system and 65th best in the sport on MLB Pipeline. He made his MLB debut last season and tallied one hit across three games. However, last season, the 22-year-old was also given his first extended look at both Double and Triple-A and was able to hold his own. In 76 games at Double-A, the outfielder held a .271/.342/.409 line. Across 35 games at Triple-A Iowa, Alcantara posted a strong .292/.378/.469 slash line. Fantasy managers in deeper formats should monitor his production in spring training, as he could be a viable stash candidate in NL-only leagues if he performs well.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

6 months agoThe Chicago Cubs recalled outfield prospect Kevin Alcantara from Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday and optioned outfielder Miles Mastrobuoni to the Arizona Complex League in a corresponding move. Alcantara, the team's No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline, earned the late-season call-up after batting a combined .278/.353/.428 with a .781 OPS, 14 home runs, 61 RBI, 14 stolen bases and 61 runs scored in 111 total games with Iowa and Double-A Tennessee this year. The 22-year-old outfielder is extremely athletic for his size (6-foot-6, 188 pounds). He hits from the right side and also throws right-handed. Alcantara could get a little run to close out the Cubs' 2024 season this weekend, especially if Seiya Suzuki (ankle) is unable to return. Alcantara can get long with his swing because of his size, but if he can shorten his swing down, he has easy 30-homer power at the next level.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
