Kelvin Gutierrez May See Less Playing Time

The Kansas City Royals have been impressed with rookie Kelvin Gutierrez's strong debut in the majors, but he may find himself the odd man out in the near future. KC has elected to call up top prospect Nicky Lopez, and that move could have repercussions across the lineup. Lopez is exclusively a second baseman, but his presence pushes Whit Merrifield to the outfield, particularly to right field since Billy Hamilton and Alex Gordon have the other two spots on lockdown. In turn, that pushes Jorge Soler to DH on a regular basis. That means the team is comfortable letting new star Hunter Dozier resume playing third base regularly, and that leaves Gutierrez without a spot. Add in that he's conveniently gone into a 1-for-14 slump, and it means Gutierrez is likely about to be relegated to either a backup or minor-league role.
