Kaapo Kahkonen Earns A Shutout Sunday
1 year agoNew Jersey Devils goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen earned a shutout as part of a 4-0 win over the rival New York Islanders on Sunday. The blanking was the first shutout of the season for the 27-year-old who was shipped to the Devils from the San Jose Sharks prior to the March 8 NHL trade deadline. It's been a tough season playing for a weak Sharks club as Kahkonen still sits with a 3.69 goals-against average and an .897 save percentage across 34 games, going 7-22-0 in that time. With the win, the Devils remain in the playoff hunt as they sit with a 35-33-4 record, five points back of the Washington Capitals for the second Wild Card spot in the east, although Washington owns two games in hand.

Kaapo Kahkonen In Goal Thursday
1 year agoSan Jose Sharks goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen is the starting netminder for Thursday's home game versus the Anaheim Ducks. Kahkonen is the team's starting goalie for the foreseeable future with Mackenzie Blackwood being placed on injured reserve on Wednesday. The 27-year-old has struggled again this season as he sports a 3.63 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage across 28 games (24 starts), going 6-18-2 on a Sharks team that is tied for the least amount of points in the NHL alongside the Chicago Blackhawks. He worked to a 3.85 GAA and .883 Sv% across 37 games in his first full season with the Sharks last season. He does have a strong matchup on hand, however, as the Ducks sit in a tie for 29th with 2.59 goals per game on the season.

Kaapo Kahkonen A Risky Streaming Option Friday
1 year agoSan Jose Sharks goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen is expected to start Friday against the Arizona Coyotes. The Sharks have been rotating between Kahkonen and Mackenzie Blackwood for the last month or so, and that will continue on Friday. While the Sharks have one of the worst records in the NHL, that is mostly due to the horrific start they got off to. Over the last 18 games, they have gone 9-7-2 with wins over some of the best teams in the league. That being said, Kahkonen could be a decent streaming option against a reeling Coyotes squad that has lost four in a row while scoring just eight goals in those games. It's risky, but with a light slate on Friday it could be the best option available for those in need of a start.

Kaapo Kahkonen Misses Friday's Practice
1 year agoSan Jose Sharks goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen (upper body) missed Friday's practice and is questionable for Saturday's meeting with Pittsburgh. The Finnish netminder was involved in a collision with Vancouver Canucks forward Andrei Kuzmenko Thursday night. Kahkonen was pulled from the contest in the middle of the second frame after he had allowed six goals on 19 shots. He was seen on the Sharks bench but might now be unavailable for the next game. San Jose is off to a horrible start, and Kahkonen has taken a few beatings as well, going 0-4-0 with a 4.30 goals-against average and a .876 save percentage. Mackenzie Blackwood should start Saturday as the Sharks continue to search for their first victory.
