2 years agoThe Seattle Mariners designated left-hander Justus Sheffield for assignment on Thursday to make room on the 40-man roster for infielder Tommy La Stella, who was signed to a one-year deal Thursday. Sheffield has pitched in five major-league seasons (four with Seattle) and has gone 12-12 with a 5.47 ERA (4.77 FIP), 1.63 WHIP and 18.2 percent strikeout rate in 186 innings covering 48 appearances (33 starts). Last year in Seattle he had a 3.86 ERA (4.83 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, six walks and seven strikeouts in just 11 2/3 innings over six outings (one start). If Sheffield isn't claimed off waivers or traded to another team, he could return to the organization as both starting and relief depth.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
