11 months agoSan Francisco Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee and third baseman Matt Chapman are both receiving the day off for Thursday's series finale in Colorado against the Rockies. Austin Slater is starting in center field and is batting sixth, while Wilmer Flores is manning the hot corner and is batting cleanup against Rockies right-hander Cal Quantrill. Lee is currently riding a six-game hitting streak but will take a seat for the first time since April 24. Chapman has cooled off at the plate after a hot start in the first month of the season. It's his first day of rest since April 20. Flores is hitless in four career at-bats against Quantrill and is hitting just .213 (19-for-89) on the year with one home run and 13 RBI in 32 games, but he'll be a DFS sleeper on Thursday in the cleanup spot at hitter-friendly Coors Field.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

6 months agoSan Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman continued his strong offensive second half in Monday's 6-3 win over the Diamondbacks. Chapman went 2-for-4 with a triple, a two-run, inside-the-park home run, three RBI, a walk, and two strikeouts. The 31-year-old hit a third-inning Eduardo Rodriguez fastball off the center-field wall, which ricocheted back into center field and allowed him to scamper around the bases for his 27th homer of the season. Chapman has put together an impressive second half after a lackluster first half, slashing .275/.354/.565 with 14 HR, 35 RBI, and six stolen bases in 200 at-bats. Chapman provided high-end power earlier in his career, and his second half has shown that he still has the ability to do so.--Connelly Doan - RotoBaller

7 months agoFirst baseman/outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. and third baseman Matt Chapman each homered twice in the San Francisco Giants' 9-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. The homers were the seventh and eighth for Wade Jr. and the 25th and 26th for Chapman. Both players knocked in two runs each. On the season, Wade Jr. is hitting .267 with eight home runs, 33 RBI, two stolen bases, and 44 runs scored. Chapman, who just signed a long-term extension to stay with the team, is hitting .249 with 26 home runs, 75 RBI, 15 stolen bases, and 95 runs scored. Wade Jr. and Chapman should be key components for the Giants next season.--Mike Carter - RotoBaller

7 months agoSan Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman is headed to the paternity list on Tuesday, and the Giants will recall infielder Casey Schmitt from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move to join the team in Baltimore for their series against the Orioles. There was hope that Chapman's child might come next week when the Giants are in Arizona, where Chapman lives. With Gold Glove third baseman now out for probably the next three days, Brett Wisely will shift to the hot corner on Tuesday and bat ninth against Orioles right-hander Albert Suarez. Fantasy managers should expect the 31-year-old Chapman to be back for the series opener on Friday in Kansas City against the Royals. Wisely, who is hitting just .229/.271/.333 with three homers in 231 at-bats this year, is a weak DFD sleeper option at the bottom of San Fran's batting order on Tuesday.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

7 months agoThe San Francisco Giants have signed third baseman Matt Chapman to a six-year, $151 million contract extension. The new contract replaces the old one in which Chapman could have opted out at the end of the season and test free agency. It will begin in 2025 and run through 2030, with no money being deferred and it also includes a no-trade clause. At age 31, Chapman is posting the best contact rate of his career (79.3%) which is leading to his lowest strikeout rate since 2019 (the last and only year he was an All-Star), amounting to a .247-22-69-90-13 line with a .337 wOBA and 118 wRC+. He's also played Gold Glove-caliber defense, which he's already won four times in the past.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBaller
