Juan Soto Due For A Contract Extension?
4 years agoWashington Nationals star outfielder Juan Soto could be in line for a big contract extension after the Padres signed 22-year-old shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. to a 14-year, $340 million deal on Wednesday night. Soto is also 22 years old. He will make $8.5 million in 2021 and has four years remaining before he can reach free agency. The Nats and Soto discussed an extension last spring training, but the sides didn't get very far and haven't picked up talks since. He has a career OPS of .972 after leading baseball in on-base percentage (.490), slugging percentage (.695), OPS (1.185) and OPS+ (212) in 2020. Soto also became the youngest player to win the National League batting title while also winning a Silver Slugger Award and finishing fifth in the NL MVP voting. Already a top-five fantasy pick, the 22-year-old also wants to improve his agility and steal more bases in 2021 after swiping 23 bags in 313 games to this point in his career.
