4 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jose Alvarado will get the first crack at save opportunities for now, manager Joe Girardi said on Friday. The decision to move Alvarado into a closing role comes on the heels of Hector Neris blowing his third straight save in a 13-12 loss to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday. Alvarado owns a 2.70 ERA through 26 2/3 innings pitched this season and has only given up three hits while striking out 10 over 8 2/3 innings in his last seven games. While the 26-year-old left-hander is an obvious pickup for those seeking saves, he remains a risky fantasy option due to his 19.7 percent walk rate. If Alvarado can't control the number of walks he gives up, he won't keep the closing job for long. Neris' fantasy value obviously takes a hit, but the Phillies closer picture remains a fluid situation, and Archie Bradley could get some chances as well.--Chelena Goldman

10 months agoAfter blowing his last save opportunity in London, Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jose Alvarado picked up his 12th save of the season in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Red Sox. Alvarado entered the game to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning up by three. He got the first out on a ground-out, allowed a single, and got the final two outs on a pop-out and strikeout. The 29-year-old has seen the most save opportunities of the team this season and has pitched well overall, converting all but two opportunities with a 3.41 ERA, a 9.93 K/9 rate, and a 3.72 BB/9 rate. Jeff Hoffman has seen eight save opportunities and has also pitched very well this season. Both players are worth a look in roto leagues, but Alvarado has provided more universal fantasy value.--Connelly Doan - RotoBaller

10 months agoPhiladelphia Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado blew the save on Sunday by allowing three runs (two earned) in 2/3 of an inning against the New York Mets. He was also saddled with the loss. It was just the second blown save of the season for the 29-year-old. Alvarado issued a pair of walks and two singles before recording an out and also hit a batter to force in a run. It was not a pretty performance from Alvarado, but he is still the go-to guy in the Phillies bullpen. Expect him to get the team's next save chance when they kick off a series against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.--Raymond Harrison - RotoBaller

11 months agoPhiladelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jose Alvarado picked up his ninth save of the season in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Rangers. Alvarado came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning up by three. He got the first out on a ground-out, had a runner reach on a throwing error and allowed a single, and ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts. The 29-year-old has pitched well overall this season, converting all of his save opportunities with a 3.54 ERA, an 8.85 K/9 rate, and a 3.10 BB/9 rate in 22 appearances. However, Jeff Hoffman, who pitched in the eighth inning of this game, has also pitched well and has converted three of six save opportunities. Alvarado appears to have more fantasy value of the two, but his overall value may remain in the mid-tier if Hoffman continues to see somewhat frequent save chances.--Connelly Doan - RotoBaller

11 months agoPhiladelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jose Alvarado had a tough outing on Thursday, blowing the save and taking the loss in a 6-5 defeat at the hands of the New York Mets. Alvarado allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out two. It was a tough situation for the lefty, who inherited the ghost runner in a one-run game. He had been rock solid of late, allowing just one run in his last eight innings pitched. Alvarado should still be the go-to guy for the Phillies, but don't expect him to always pitch in save situations as the team has shown the willingness to use him earlier in games.--Matt Garon - RotoBaller
