3 years agoNew York Yankees starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery allowed five runs, four earned, in Tuesday's no-decision against the Toronto Blue Jays. Montgomery pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and four walks while striking out four batters. The southpaw did yield a home run and exhibited some really shaky control in the first inning, though the underlying numbers suggest he was better than he looked in this performance. For one thing, Montgomery generated 13 whiffs on 97 pitches, 12 of them on his off-speed offerings. For another, he had an average exit velocity against of just 84.2 MPH, suggesting that he was perhaps a victim of some poor batted-ball luck. Montgomery had allowed three runs or fewer in six of his last seven starts heading into the contest, so he should be expected to bounce back, even in a pretty tough matchup on June 20 against the Oakland Athletics.--Tim Capurso
