Jacob Lopez Tallies Season-High 11 Punchouts
4 months agoTampa Bay Rays starting pitching prospect Jacob Lopez struck out a season-high 11 batters across 4 1/3 innings on Friday. He allowed no runs with just two hits and one walk. When in the minors, Lopez has typically operated as a starter, but across the 17 major-league innings he has logged, he was deployed out of the bullpen. The 26-year-old has held a rough 4.63 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and a 17:44 BB:K at Triple-A this season across 35 innings. He pitched five innings in the big leagues in May but struggled with an 8.44 ERA. The southpaw has flashed high potential at times, with five starts at Triple-A this season where he allowed one run or less, but he also showed inconsistency with two starts where he allowed four or more runs. Lopez should return to the major leagues later this summer but may revert back to a bullpen role.
