Hunter Greene Lands On The Injured List
2 years agoCincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to right hip pain. The move is retroactive to Sunday while the club activated first baseman Joey Votto from the 60-day injured list on Monday as well. Finally, right-hander Kevin Herget was designated for assignment to make room for Votto on the 40-man roster. Greene, 23, is in the midst of a fine season that includes a 3.93 ERA while posting an identical 3.58 FIP and SIERA. The hard-throwing righty has struck out a hefty 31.4% of the batters he's faced in his 14 starts, all but three of them finishing with three earned runs or fewer surrendered. Fantasy managers will eagerly await the former No. 1 overall draft pick's return.

Hunter Greene To Return On Sunday With Limited Workload
6 months agoCincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene (elbow) will come off the 15-day injured list on Sunday on a controlled workload to face the division-rival Pittsburgh Pirates. Greene is recovering from right-elbow soreness and threw 52 games in a simulated game on Tuesday. Still, the 25-year-old hasn't been fully stretched out, so despite the plus matchup against Pittsburgh this weekend, he won't be a recommended fantasy start for those still playing for a championship late in the year. If Greene doesn't suffer a setback on Sunday, he'll be more appealing in fantasy lineups for his final start of the year next week, which is lined up against the division-rival Chicago Cubs. Before his elbow injury, Greene took a step forward in 2024 as a first-time All-Star with a 9-4 record, career-best 2.83 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and a 162:53 K:BB in 143 1/3 innings over his 24 starts.

Hunter Greene To Throw Live Batting Practice
6 months agoCincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene (elbow) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session on Tuesday in Cincinnati, according to manager David Bell. It's possible Greene could return to the starting rotation and make two starts before the end of the 2024 season. Greene is working his way back from right-elbow soreness, and this will be his second live batting practice session. For fantasy managers still playing for a championship this year, the 25-year-old Greene could still be an asset down the stretch after going 9-4 with a career-best 2.83 ERA (3.42 FIP), a 1.02 WHIP and 162 strikeouts in 143 1/3 innings pitched over his 24 starts for the Reds this year. The former second overall pick in 2017 hasn't pitched in a big-league game since Aug. 13, though, so he could be on an innings limit when he returns from the injured list. UPDATE: Green threw three simulated "innings" of 20, 20 and 10 pitches and said he felt great. His next outing could be in the big leagues this Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Hunter Greene Nearing Return To Reds Rotation
7 months agoCincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene (elbow), who was put on the injured list on Aug. 17 as a precaution due to right-elbow soreness, said he felt good after throwing live batting practice on Sept. 11 in St. Louis. Greene threw around 25 pitches in that session and plans on having a longer session on Saturday in Minnesota. After that, the next step would be to pitch in a major-league game in Cincinnati during the team's Sept. 17-22 homestand. "My focus has been making sure that my mindset continues to be me versus you," Greene said. "I think that's really important when you're going through this process, is keeping that competitive mind and being able to kind of close that gap of, you know, kind of that feeling of being out for a month and not gracing a big league mound." The first-time All-Star should be lined up for a few starts before the end of the regular season in what has been a breakout season.

Hunter Greene To Throw Bullpens Thursday And Sunday
7 months agoCincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene (elbow) is slated to throw bullpen sessions on Thursday and Sunday, according to manager David Bell. It's the first time that Greene has thrown off a mound since landing on the injured list in the middle of August due to right-elbow inflammation, so it's a big step in his recovery. The 25-year-old will eventually need to progress to facing live hitters and will probably need a minor-league rehab assignment, too, so fantasy managers probably can't expect him back in the big leagues for another couple weeks. There are only a few weeks left in the 2024 regular season as well, so there's no guarantee that Greene is going to make much of a difference in fantasy down the stretch. The former second overall pick in 2017 has had a successful 2024 season overall, though, going 9-4 with a 2.83 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and 162 strikeouts over 143 1/3 innings in his 24 starts.
